Is there Truth in Legends

We have all heard stories on myths, like the gods of Olympus or creatures such as dragons. Question is are they all just tall tales and children’s bedtime stories? How could someone or even groups of people over thousands of years come up with the similar accounts and stories? I think where there is smoke, there is also flame.
