PlayStation Showcase September 2021
This past Thursday was an event and a half from PlayStation, considering they had nothing to bring we did not already expect, or so we thought. I mean talking points that we were expected were obviously Horizon Zero Dawn 2 and God of War 2, along with the dreaded GTA 5 enhanced version that no one but Rockstar cares for. But damn, did Sony surprise us.
First thing we hear is the voice of Bastila Shan and that was followed by the gorgeous ignition of that ominous red lightsaber and then we see the Dark Lord himself, Revan in stunning modern render. The Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) remake brought tears of joy to not only my eyes, but to Star Wars fans around the world. Afterall, if it is still regarded as the pinnacle of Star Wars gaming. We may have no release date but whatever year this magical remake hits consoles may as well already hand the Game of the Year award over to the team behind it, at Aspyr.
Then out came the folks at Insomniac, who are now brining us not one but two Marvel games. The first, being Spider-Man 2 which introduces the iconic villain, Venom as a potential playable character as well as seeing Miles Morales team up with Peter Parker as the dynamic web slinging duo. There also seemed to be a mysterious villain voicing over the teaser but more may be revealed in 2023, the games supposed release year. The second marvel thriller is, The Wolverine. Now while we have not seen much from the teaser shown, you can bet there will be more coming soon and Insomniac have already stated the game is to be a ‘full size game and feature a mature tone’. These were not even the only Marvel games, as Square Enix are bringing us a complete and new story from the Guardian of the Galaxy universe, with a release date of October 26th of this year.
Moving away from Marvel, we got a lot more of God of War Ragnarök which is looking to bring a climatic close to the Norse saga and we heard more on the Horizon Zero Dawn sequel. Another talking point for PlayStation exclusives, was petrol heads’ dreams everywhere, Gran Turismo 7, releasing March 4th 2022, and the fun and parkour-heavy looking, Forspoken, stated for a Spring 2022 release. Another wacky adventure is on the way with Deathloop, a time bending trip with a September 14th release date. Got a glance at the story behind the DLC turned full-fledged game, Rainbow Six and finally, the nostalgia was back with the complete Uncharted series looking to be remastered for PS5 and of course that game that keeps jumping generations, GTA 5.
In all, PlayStation did more than I could’ve hoped for, they had me at KOTOR and kept me with Insomniac’s insane Marvel line up, got us hyped with exclusives and finished it off with a nice personal touch in the form of developer interviews. They showcased some great games, and really got the fans hearts racing, if you can ignore the GTA 6 disappointment and not jump on the GTA 5 bandwagon hate, then it was showcase not to have missed.
